What Freemasonry is
(and what it is not)

Freemasonry is a fraternity where men focus on character, personal responsibility, and service. Most guys come looking for better friendships, mentorship, and a steady way to keep growing as a man.

At Reed Lodge #316 in downtown Evansville, that usually looks like:

  • building real friendships with men who show up

  • learning from tradition and mentorship (without the drama)

  • serving Evansville and the Tri-State through community support

What Freemasonry Is Not

Freemasonry is not a religion, and it doesn’t replace your faith.
It’s not politics, and it’s not a place to argue elections.
It’s not a business networking scheme.
And it’s not a quick-fix “join and your life changes overnight” thing.

If you’re curious, we’ll answer questions honestly and let you decide at your own pace.

Is Freemasonry a good fit for you?

Freemasonry tends to fit men who:

  • want real friendships and accountability (not just online community)

  • care about integrity and personal conduct

  • want to serve their community in practical ways

  • are willing to show up consistently and learn over time

  • prefer something steady and respectful, not hype or drama

If you’re mostly looking for:

  • business leads

  • political debate

  • a quick status symbol

…then this probably won’t be what you’re looking for, and that’s okay.

Why join Reed Lodge #316
in Evansville?

We’re not for everyone—and that’s okay. Most men who fit well here are looking for something steady and real.

What you’ll find at Reed Lodge

  • a local lodge in downtown Evansville with a long history and a strong sense of place

  • men who take character and personal conduct seriously

  • mentorship and structure (especially if you’re trying to grow as a husband, father, professional, or leader)

  • opportunities to serve Evansville and the Tri-State through community support and charity work

  • a mix of ages and backgrounds—guys who might not meet otherwise, but treat each other like brothers

What you won’t get

  • a sales pitch

  • pressure to join fast

  • promises that Masonry will “fix your life” overnight

How joining works in Indiana

1) Start a conversation
Send a message through the form (or call/email). Tell us where you live and what’s got you interested.

2) Meet a few of our members
We’ll invite you to meet in a normal setting (coffee, a casual visit, or a public event) so you can ask questions and see if it feels like a fit.

3) Background check + petition (when you’re ready)
In Indiana, a background check is part of the process, and we’ll explain exactly how it works.
If you still want to move forward after meeting us, you’ll complete a petition.

4) Petition is read + an investigating committee meets with you
After the petition is received and read in lodge, a small committee will meet with you, review the required information, and ask follow-up questions as needed.

5) Lodge vote
The lodge votes on petitions after the required waiting period and after the investigation steps are complete.

6) If accepted, scheduling your degrees
If you’re accepted, we’ll coordinate scheduling and help you understand expectations for participation and learning along the way.

Note:
Freemasonry is something a man chooses of his own free will. Our job is to answer questions honestly and help you understand what you’re asking for—no pressure.

Ready to ask a few questions? Use the form below and we’ll follow up.

What to expect when you reach out (no pressure)

When you contact Reed Lodge, you’re not “signing up.” You’re starting a conversation.
Here’s what happens most of the time:

  • We reply and answer your questions (email, call, or text, your preference).

  • We invite you to meet a few members in a normal setting (coffee, a casual visit, or a public event).

  • If you want to move forward after that, we’ll explain the Indiana process clearly and do things the right way.

If you’re nervous about walking into a lodge building cold, don’t be. We can meet you outside, show you around the public areas, and introduce you to a couple guys so it feels normal.
